TULIP TREE DESIGN

WHO WE ARE

Tulip Tree Design LLC is an independently owned, full-service gardening company founded and managed by Daniel Phillips. With an emphasis on horticulture, native species, and sensitivity to site conditions, we take pride in creating resilient, beautiful gardens with year-round interest.

Specializing in design, installation, and maintenance, we also offer custom construction of garden planters, gates, and fences. Tulip Tree Design creates and maintains vibrant gardens in urban, suburban, and rural settings.

Tulip Tree is a common name for the magnificent Liriondendron tulipifera, a native tree species in the Magnoliaceae family, found throughout North America. We look forward to working with you!

Featured Work

Lavender Lake & LLOHI

Lavender Lake is a bar and restaurant in the Gowanus neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY. Tulip Tree began working with Lavender Lake in June 2016 and designs, installs, and maintains a large backyard garden, as well as ever-changing mini gardens in six cedar planters and one converted Cushman car. LLoHI is a "chill rooftop bar with endless summer vibes" in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY. Tulip Tree delivered all of the "living" design components, both inside and out. From the individual pots lining the interior windowsills, table vases filled with seasonal cuttings, and outdoor planters along the edges of the deck, we contributed multiple design elements that blend with the overall aesthetic of the space.

40 Lexington
Ave.

In the heart of the Clinton Hill neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY, this 20th-century warehouse has been converted to nine luxury residential homes, each with unique outdoor space. The young families at "40 Lex" all view their access to urban outdoor space as an opportunity — to support the ecology of NYC, participate in the slow-food movement, and enhance the enjoyment and aesthetic of their space with permanent installations custom-built by Tulip Tree Design. Entering their second season, these young gardens create a canvas for endless play with perennial, annual, shrub, and grass varieties, interspersed with culinary herbs and vegetables. With creativity and care, we will continue to craft these gardens with the evolving tastes and needs of our clients for years to come.

Residential and victory gardens

In addition to installations that primarily feature flowering plants, Tulip Tree has extensive experience with vegetable gardens. At Wassaic Project (a non-profit art exhibition and residency program in upstate NY), Tulip Tree refurbished and managed the community garden for the 2018 growing season. The garden supplied Wassaic residents with fresh tomatoes, carrots, squash, and a variety of other produce and herbs. In Maplewood, NJ, Tulip Tree planned and built a family vegetable garden, and returns monthly to assist with maintenance and management. Vegetables thrive in Tulip Tree-designed custom planters for clients in Brooklyn, NY, and we grow many varieties of vegetables organically from seed. Ask to see our 2021 plant offerings!

From spring ephemerals to rustic holiday decor, we create unique, eye-catching designs to delight the senses. Starting from scratch? We also offer custom container fabrication available to suit a variety of needs.
